Message: “Hope Who Came Into the Fear”

두려움 속으로 들어오신 희망

Opening

Merry Christmas, church. Tonight I want to start with a question that is simple, but not easy: Where is fear living in you right now.

메리 크리스마스, 사랑하는 교회 여러분. 오늘 밤 저는 단순하지만 쉽지 않은 질문으로 시작하고 싶습니다. 요즘 여러분 안에서 두려움은 어디에 살고 있나요.

Naming Our Fear

Maybe it is obvious: a diagnosis, a bill, a fragile relationship, a child you worry about, a job that does not feel secure. Maybe it is the fear of getting older, when your body does not do what it used to do, and the future feels less like an open road and more like a narrow hallway. Or maybe it is quieter, not one clear problem, but a deep uneasiness, because life can change so fast.

Sometimes fear is about something specific, and sometimes it is more like anxiety, a trembling under the surface that says, I am not in control, and I never really was. And there is another kind of fear too: the fear that grows out of being hurt, ignored, or treated like you do not belong, the fear that trains you to stay small, to stay careful, to stop expecting too much.

어떤 두려움은 아주 분명합니다. 진단 결과, 청구서, 불안한 관계, 걱정되는 자녀, 흔들리는 직장 같은 것들입니다. 또 어떤 두려움은 나이 듦과 함께 옵니다. 몸이 예전 같지 않고, 앞날이 넓은 길처럼 느껴지기보다 좁은 복도처럼 느껴질 때가 있죠.

그런데 두려움은 꼭 한 가지 문제만을 가리키지 않을 때도 많습니다. 분명한 이유는 없는데 마음이 계속 불안하고, 쉽게 쉬지 못합니다. 삶이 너무 빨리 바뀔 수 있다는 걸 우리는 알기 때문입니다.

두려움은 때로는 구체적인 대상 앞에서 생기지만, 때로는 더 깊은 층에서 올라오는 불안이 되기도 합니다. 내가 통제할 수 있는 게 별로 없구나, 사실 나는 처음부터 다 붙잡고 있었던 적이 없구나, 하는 떨림 말입니다.

그리고 또 다른 두려움이 있습니다. 상처받은 경험, 무시당했던 기억, 나는 여기서 완전히 환영받지 못한다는 느낌이 쌓여 생기는 두려움입니다. 그래서 사람들 앞에서 스스로를 줄이고, 조심하고, 기대하지 않게 만드는 두려움입니다.

The Good News of Christmas

If you came tonight with any of that, here is the good news of Christmas: God does not wait outside your fear, asking you to fix yourself first. God comes into it.

오늘 밤 그런 두려움을 가지고 오셨다면, 성탄의 복음은 이렇게 말합니다. 하나님은 우리의 두려움이 사라지길 밖에서 기다리시지 않습니다. 먼저 스스로를 고치라고 요구하지도 않으십니다. 하나님은 두려움 속으로 들어오십니다.

Simeon: A Man Who Waited

Luke shows us that truth through Simeon. Luke says Simeon was righteous and devout, and he was waiting for the consolation of Israel. That word consolation is not just a nice feeling. It is God setting things right, God keeping God’s promise, God coming close in a world that feels wrong.

Then Luke adds one key line: the Holy Spirit was upon him. Simeon’s hope is not self made. It is received.

누가복음은 시므온을 통해 그 사실을 보여 줍니다. 누가는 시므온을 의롭고 경건한 사람으로 소개하며, 그가 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리고 있었다고 말합니다. 여기서 위로는 단지 기분이 좋아지는 위로가 아닙니다. 하나님이 잘못된 것을 바로잡으시고, 약속을 지키시고, 뒤틀린 세상 속으로 가까이 오시는 위로입니다.

그리고 누가는 아주 중요한 말을 덧붙입니다. 성령이 그 위에 계시더라. 이 말은 시므온의 희망이 그가 만들어 낸 것이 아니라, 하나님께 받은 것이라는 뜻입니다.

Promise, Not Wishful Thinking

Luke also says the Spirit showed Simeon that he would not die before he saw the Lord’s Messiah. So Simeon is not doing wishful thinking. He is living from a promise.

That matters because optimism and hope are not the same. Optimism says, I think things will work out. Christian hope says, God has spoken, and God will be faithful.

And still, the promise does not remove the waiting. Simeon lives in the long middle space between what God has said and what he still sees, and many of us live there too.

누가는 또 성령께서 시므온에게 주님의 그리스도를 보기 전에는 죽지 않을 것이라고 알려 주셨다고 말합니다. 그러니 시므온은 막연한 기대를 품은 것이 아닙니다. 그는 약속을 붙들고 산 것입니다.

그래서 낙관과 희망은 다릅니다. 낙관은 아마 잘 될 거야라고 말하지만, 성탄의 희망은 하나님이 말씀하셨고 하나님은 신실하실 거야라고 말합니다.

그런데 중요한 사실이 있습니다. 약속이 있다고 해서 기다림이 사라지지는 않습니다. 시므온은 여전히 하나님이 말씀하신 것과 눈앞에 보이는 현실 사이, 그 긴 중간의 시간을 삽니다. 우리도 그 자리에 살 때가 많습니다.

Hope You Can Hold

Then one day, Simeon is led by the Spirit into the temple. Mary and Joseph walk in with the baby Jesus. No throne, no army, no spotlight, just a poor couple carrying a child.

Simeon takes the child in his arms. That is the heart of Christmas theology: God’s salvation does not come as an idea. It comes as a person. God comes close enough to be held.

그러던 어느 날, 시므온이 성령의 인도하심을 따라 성전으로 들어가고, 마리아와 요셉이 아기 예수를 데리고 들어옵니다. 왕좌도 없고, 군대도 없고, 스포트라이트도 없습니다. 가난한 부부가 아기를 안고 들어올 뿐입니다.

그리고 시므온은 아기를 품에 안습니다. 여기서 성탄 신학의 핵심이 드러납니다. 하나님의 구원은 아이디어로 오지 않았습니다. 사람으로 오셨습니다. 하나님은 안길 수 있을 만큼 가까이 오셨습니다.

Simeon’s Prayer and Real Peace

Simeon prays, Lord, now you are letting your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation. According to your word, that is the key.

Simeon’s peace is not based on everything finally being fixed. Rome is still Rome. People still suffer. The future is still unknown. But Simeon can say, I can go in peace, because God kept God’s word.

The world says peace is when nothing can threaten you. Simeon shows us peace is when you are held by someone deeper than what threatens you.

시므온은 기도합니다. 주재여 이제는 말씀하신 대로 종을 평안히 놓아 주시는도다. 내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니. 말씀하신 대로, 이 말이 핵심입니다.

시므온의 평안은 모든 문제가 해결되어서 생긴 게 아닙니다. 로마는 여전히 로마이고, 사람들은 여전히 고통받고, 미래는 여전히 모릅니다. 그런데도 시므온은 말합니다. 이제는 평안히 놓일 수 있습니다. 하나님이 말씀을 지키셨기 때문입니다.

세상이 말하는 평안은 보통 이렇습니다. 아무도 나를 위협하지 않을 때 평안하다. 하지만 시므온이 보여 주는 평안은 다릅니다. 위협보다 더 깊은 분이 나를 붙드실 때 평안합니다.

Fear Grips, Hope Releases

That peace loosens Simeon’s grip. It releases him from the feeling that it is his job to hold the future together.

Fear makes us grip tighter, control more, protect ourselves, close our hearts. But when Simeon holds Jesus, he learns that the deepest security is not control. The deepest security is communion, God with us.

그 평안은 시므온을 바꿉니다. 움켜쥔 손을 풀게 합니다. 미래를 내가 붙잡아야 한다는 강박에서 놓이게 합니다.

두려움은 우리를 움켜쥐게 합니다. 더 꽉 잡아, 더 통제해, 더 지켜, 마음을 닫아. 그러나 시므온이 예수를 품는 순간, 그는 배웁니다. 가장 깊은 안전은 통제가 아니라 함께하심이라는 것을요. 하나님이 우리와 함께 계신다는 것을요.

Not Sentimental: The Shadow of the Cross

At this point we might expect a sweet ending, but Simeon goes deeper. He says this child is destined for the falling and rising of many, and to be a sign that will be opposed. Then he tells Mary, a sword will pierce your own soul too.

Simeon refuses to make Christmas sentimental. He tells the truth: when God comes close, things get exposed and shaken. Christmas already carries the shadow of the cross, not because God loves suffering, but because God is willing to go all the way into the world’s pain to heal it from the inside.

So Christian hope is not denial. It does not call evil good. It does not pretend pain is holy. It names the darkness, and still refuses to surrender to it.

여기서 우리는 달콤한 결말을 기대할 수 있지만, 시므온은 더 깊이 들어갑니다. 그는 이 아기가 많은 사람을 넘어지게도 하고 일어서게도 하며, 비방을 받는 표적이 될 것이라고 말합니다. 그리고 마리아에게 칼이 네 마음을 찌르듯 하리라고 말합니다.

시므온은 성탄을 감상으로 만들지 않습니다. 하나님이 가까이 오시면 감춰졌던 것들이 드러나고, 우리가 안전하다고 믿었던 것들이 흔들린다는 진실을 말합니다.

그리고 성탄은 이미 십자가의 그림자를 품고 있습니다. 하나님이 고통을 사랑하셔서가 아니라, 세상의 고통 속으로 끝까지 들어오셔서 그 고통을 안에서부터 치유하시기 위해 오셨기 때문입니다.

그러므로 기독교 희망은 부정이 아닙니다. 악을 선이라 부르지 않고, 고통을 거룩하다고 미화하지 않습니다. 오히려 어둠을 똑바로 보면서도, 어둠에게 마지막 말을 내어주지 않는 힘입니다.

Application: Two Directions

First, for those who feel fear because life feels smaller than it used to: Simeon is good news for you. Hope does not depend on being impressive, young, or powerful. It depends on God’s faithfulness.

Simeon did not control the future. He waited with God, stayed open to the Spirit, and received Christ when Christ came. And God gave him a baby: small, vulnerable, easy to overlook. God is not ashamed of smallness, and God works in places we think are too little to matter.

Second, for those who carry fear because you have been made to feel like you do not belong: Simeon calls Jesus a light for revelation to the Gentiles. This hope is not locked inside one group. It crosses boundaries.

So the church should reflect that: not a place where people have to shrink to be safe, but a place where dignity is restored and stories are honored.

Christian hope is not only something you feel inside. It becomes a way of life among us: listening, protecting, including, telling the truth, and carrying each other when fear is heavy.

이제 이 말씀을 우리 삶으로 가져오고 싶습니다. 두 가지 방향으로요.

첫째, 인생이 점점 작아지는 것 같아 두려운 분들에게 시므온은 좋은 소식입니다. 희망은 내가 얼마나 대단한가, 얼마나 젊은가, 얼마나 힘이 있는가에 달려 있지 않습니다. 희망은 하나님이 얼마나 신실하신가에 달려 있습니다.

시므온은 미래를 통제하지 못했지만, 하나님과 함께 기다렸고, 성령의 인도하심에 마음을 열었고, 그리스도가 오셨을 때 그분을 품었습니다. 그리고 하나님은 그에게 아기, 작고 약하고 쉽게 지나칠 수 있는 형태로 구원을 주셨습니다. 그 말은 하나님이 작은 것을 부끄러워하지 않으시고, 우리가 너무 작은데라고 생각하는 자리에서도 일하신다는 뜻입니다.

둘째, 상처와 배제의 경험 때문에 두려움을 가진 분들에게 시므온은 예수를 이방을 비추는 빛이라고 부릅니다. 이 희망은 특정한 사람들만의 것이 아니라 경계를 넘어오는 빛입니다.

그러니 교회도 마땅히 그렇게 되어야 합니다. 사람들이 스스로를 줄여야 안전한 곳이 아니라, 존엄이 회복되고 이야기가 존중받는 곳이어야 합니다.

기독교 희망은 내 마음속 감정으로만 끝나지 않습니다. 희망은 우리 가운데 삶의 방식이 됩니다. 듣고, 보호하고, 포함하고, 진실을 말하고, 두려움이 무거울 때 서로를 붙들어 주는 삶입니다.

Closing Invitation

So tonight I invite you to do two things.

First, name your fear quietly before God.

Second, ask for the grace Simeon received: the grace to recognize Christ when he comes near, even when he comes small and quiet, even when he comes in ways you did not expect.

Because this is Christmas: God has come into our fear. And if God is with us, fear does not get the final word. Jesus does.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

오늘 밤 저는 여러분을 이렇게 초대하고 싶습니다.

첫째, 두려움을 숨기지 말고 조용히 하나님께 이름 붙여 드리세요.

둘째, 시므온에게 주어진 은혜를 구하세요. 작고 조용하게 오시는 그리스도를 알아볼 수 있는 은혜를요. 우리가 예상하지 못한 방식으로 오실 때에도요.

왜냐하면 이것이 성탄이기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리의 두려움 속으로 들어오셨습니다. 그리고 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시니, 두려움이 마지막 말을 하지 못합니다. 마지막 말은 예수께 있습니다.

성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
